Toronto Maple Leafs Baseball Club
There were forty bids. We were the unsuccessful high bidder. So now we own the team.
The Toronto Maple Leafs Baseball Club — the other Maple Leafs, with roots in 1895, playing at Christie Pits — went up for sale after its longtime owner died. I’d spent years on the hill there with my kids, watching games and thinking if I owned this I could do so much more with it. It turns out most people don’t think that.
Since we bought in: a rebuilt club around the iconic hat, a membership program, our own beer in The Beer Store, and two signings that weren’t stunts — Ayami Sato, the first woman to play in a Canadian professional men’s baseball league, and Yasiel Puig. A year later the league itself turned professional. We took a semi-pro team pro.
